REFERENCES

"Of the dozens of aspiring sports broadcasters who I have mentored over the past half century, Colby Smith is by far one of the most impressive, and especially for what he has already accomplished at his young age. I first started working with Colby in December, 2018 when he was just 13 and contacted me for my advice and guidance in the field of professional hockey, broadcasting, and media which I have now worked in for more than fifty years. The great progress he has made in both his play-by-play and color calls in not only hockey, but in other team sports such as basketball and baseball, over the past two years are truly exceptional and in many aspects he has already reached a high professional level.
In addition to broadcasting, Colby has also developed other important skills for a career in professional sports media such as conducting radio and on camera broadcast interviews of players and coaches, writing press notes, game previews and post game reports, and researching, compiling, and explaining key analytics for each sport. In addition to my personal mentoring of Colby, I have also put him in touch with such elite professional sports broadcasters and long time colleagues of mine such as Mike "Doc" Emrick and Kenny Albert to offer him advice as well. Colby approaches all his work with passion, determination, and the highest professional standards, and I am pleased to predict with great confidence that he will eventually be joining the pantheon of America's greatest sportscasters in the years and decades to come."
-Bruce "Scoop" Cooper; Philadelphia, PA
"Colby is an outstanding young broadcaster. When he reached out at first and we met during baseball season, I was beyond impressed with his knowledge of the business and his path. By the time hockey season came around and he asked if he could intern with me, I was very happy to say yes. Colby works hard and does all he can to learn every aspect of the broadcasting business and what goes in to working for a pro team. This last season he called a couple of games for the road team on his own and continues to carve his own path in this industry. I could not more highly reccomend someone if you need an independent go-getter."
-Jonathan Kliment [Broadcaster. Director Of Media Relations/Director Of Diversity, Equality, & Inclusion at CAN-USA Sports]
To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this letter to highly recommend Colby Smith for the Sports Broadcasting Industry. I have known Colby as a student for 3 years and it has been a pleasure teaching him. I can assure you that Colby will be able to balance the duties of Broadcasting and his Academic pursuits.
Colby is a self-motivated young man and ideal student. He is extremely passionate, has been consistent in his studies, and scored well on his examinations. Not only is Colby an outstanding speaker during class, his passion as the voice of Edmeston Baseball has clearly been heard. Colby has been an active participant in Cross-Country and various Co-Curricular activities while maintaining a strong work ethic and high academic success.
Colby’s ability to balance Academic, Athletic and Sports Broadcasting aspects sets him apart from many other young people his age. Colby’s ingenuity makes him a perfect selection for a Sports Broadcasting position in your organization.
Sincerely,
Vincent Slesinsky

The Elmira Enforcers Dash Away The Dashers 5-3 (2/27/20)
The Elmira Enforcers were back in action Thursday night as they continued a 10 game homestand. The Danville Dashers came to town after the Enforcers claimed an exciting 3-2 overtime victory over the Thunder on Sunday afternoon. With the victory on Sunday, the Enforcers ran their winning streak to five for the second time in the month of February and being as they had defeated the Dashers in back-to-back games earlier in the month in Illinois, the Enforcers set up to turn the tables and make it six.

Elmira got off to a quick start as with just 6:37 having ticked off the clock, Cameron Yarwood took a feed on a 3-on-2 rush into the offensive zone and buried it into the back of the net to get Elmira the jumpstart. About 4 minutes later, Tyler Quintos gave the Dashers their opening goal of the contest behind Troy Passingham blocker side to even the game. The scoring wasn't finished there however as on the man advantage, former Enforcer Mitch Atkins and play making forward Fred Hein set up Quintos once again making it a 2-1 game at the first break.

The second period saw a slew of neon green and black running the offense aplenty as Elmira jumped out to a lead they wouldn't relinquish thanks to Andrew Harrison. Harrison scored both goals in the middle period of the night. One coming on the power play while the other goal was all Enforcers styles meshed in onw. The power play came first as Harrison and Yarwood played give and go before Harrison flipped a light tapper through the Danville crease into the net to even the game. Gjurich then ripped a shot from the blue line, Mini had the tip, and Harrison had the finish. The Enforcers led 3-2 at the second break.

The Dashers weren't going to go down without a fight in the third period despite giving up two straight goals to Elmira before attempting a comeback. Cameron Yarwood added a tally on the power play just 1:01 into the final frame on a perfect feed from Stepan Timofeyev before he once again beat Jesse Gordichuk, this time through the wickets. The Enforcers now quickly led by 3, 5-2, but the Dashers AJ Tesoriero hit Artem Efimov-Barkov with a pass off a bad turnover in the defensive end by Elmira to make it a two goal game with 2:46 to go. The defense shut down Danville in the closing moments as Elmira came away with a 5-3 victory - running the win streak to 6 with 8 games to go in the homestand.

Troy Passingham stopped 39 of 42 in the win. The Elmira Enforcers are back in action tomorrow night at 7:05 pm as the team closes out the two game set and the season series with the Dashers. Get your tickets now by calling (607) 734-PUCK and support Elmira in the chase for the Commissioner's Cup.
Colgate Rallies To Stun Syracuse 3-2 In OT (11/20/20)
In a typical year, the ECAC hockey slate would have been long underway by now and gruesome battles between close proximity rivals would be going on without a doubt. 2020’s a different breed. The Colgate Lady Raiders of the ECAC and Syracuse Orange Ladies of the CHA squared off tonight at the Tennity Ice Pavilion to jumpstart their hockey seasons. The Raiders return 20 of their 21 skaters from the 2019/20 season, and picked up a pair of talented freshmen who were on full display in the contest {Kayle Osborne, Goalie & Kristyna Kaltounkova, Forward}. Syracuse’s star studded lineup is headlined by junior Lauren Bellefontaine and sophomore defender Mae Batherson, who account for the last two CHA Rookie Of The Year Awards respectively. Greg Fargo mans the Raiders bench for his ninth season, while Paul Flanagan continues as the head of Syracuse’s staff for the thirteenth consecutive year. Colgate has taken all of the meetings between the two sides since 10/2/14, including 5-1 and 5-2 wins during the 2019/20 season & they looked to continue the trend in tonight’s matchup.
The opening period was all orange and white as Syracuse surged out to an early 2-0 lead behind a pair of goals from the 5’2 center from Franklin, Massachusetts Rayla Clemons. Just 1:23 in, it was Kristen Siermachesky getting the play started as on a 3-on-1 break she hit Victoria Klimek who found Rayla Clemons in stride on a cut back to the right wing circle, firing off a pitch perfect shot, and the Orange got the early jump on Colgate’s Osborne, making her collegiate debut. Colgate held their ground till later on with just 4:13 to go till intermission, Klimek’s speed and Clemon’s handiness with a stick was just too much for the Raiders to handle. Forcing a turnover in the defensive end, Victoria Klimek raced it down ice with Rayla Clemons by her side and a better pass and finish couldn’t have been desired as the underdog home squad led by a pair heading to the dressing room.
The second period was a back and forth affair with aplenty of penalty minutes, and special teams opportunities given to both sides, but neither could converge. Danielle Serdachny and the top line repeatedly put up scoring chances for Colgate, and on the other side – Syracuse’s offense delivered early but the defense stood tall, allowing just 14 shots to find Allison Small’s area between the pipes through 40 minutes of play.
The final period of regulation was dominated by the visitors from start to finish. The possession time and shot opportunities were going ‘Gates way in the opening stages of the period, but they were unable to cash in till just over midway through the period. 10:20 into the frame, Maggie MacEachern buried a strong wrister from the point over a screened and stunned Small to pull her side back within 1 as the board now read 2-1 ‘Cuse. With 6:46 remaining in the contest, Colgate received a break they’d use to their full advantage in this one. A 5-on-3 advantage was headed in their favor, and with 43 seconds ticked by… they cashed in to tie it up. Allyson Simpson put a slapper on net from beyond the left wing circle and Malia Schneider, stick in the air, punched it home tip shelf to secure the now 2-2 score. The goal was eventually upheld after a review looking for a high stick, and the score held sending the game to extra time.
The Lady Raiders opened overtime with forty-six seconds on the power play and it wouldn’t take long to wrap it up. Simpson dished it to Bard who stood in the hash marks down the right wall, as Sydney Bard came up clutch with a top shelf winner just 19 seconds into the five minute period sending the Raiders to a 1-0-0 mark, while the Orange drop to 0-1-0. Syracuse and Colgate wrap up the home-and-home set tomorrow at 4pm from the Class Of 1965 Arena in Hamilton and with no fans permitted, the game can be viewed on ESPN+.
